Adolescent Male Leopard, Okavango Delta Near Jacana Camp, Botswana
Standing Above Us

Species: Adolescent Male Leopard | Location: Okavango Delta Near Jacana Camp, Botswana

We were out on a cloudy morning in the Okavango Delta when we observed the young male Leopard lying on a portion of a dead tree. We slowly approached the Leopard in the safari vehicle until we were located a safe but closer distance to the Leopard looking upward at it. He moved around and I was able to get a number of interesting poses but most had the background tree distractlingly right behind his head. He finally moved until the background trees formed a great but distant frame around his head. Many thanks to Alex our guide and expedition leader who got us into this position.

About The Photographer

My uncle, a professional photographer gave me an Argus C-3, a light meter, and some basic information about taking photos when I was about 16. That got me started but I only became more serious after I retired in 2008 and started to engage in adventure/expedition travel using and upgrading my Canon equipment over time. Several years ago I moved to the mirrorless Olmypus (now OM) system and lenses. My principal teachers and mentors became the professional photographers and experienced travelors with whom I traveled on photogrphic expeditions with National Georgpahic/Lindblad and Natural Habitat. Local camera clubs and learning sessions on the web have also been helpful. I create a trip story telling album for each of our trips that serve as a medium to share my photos and experiences with friends and family. As my photographic skills improved I have found sucess in having my photos in juried galleries earning several awards as well as in a juried 2023-2024 traveling nature exhibit. That is the extent of how I market my photography and have placed numerous photos in homes and a coffee shop. However, as we experienced the life changing expiences of adventure traveling our perspectives on photography changed. Our overall objective is to share the global nature of our planet and the need to protect all aspects of our enviroment. Most folks haven't experienced the clutures, wildlife, and beauty that exist beyond the walls of their immediate lives. It is very gratifying when Rose and I share our experiences and photos that it inspires a few more people to get out of their cultural shell and see the world!
