Location: Okavango Delta, Botswana
We were on a game drive from the Jacana camp and came across a water hole inhabited by about 30 hippos, including several young ones. An outsider hippo tried entering the water hole, but it was chased out to higher ground where a fight ensued. The hippo in the photo was the alpha male from the hippo pod and fought with the intruder, eventually chasing him off. Several times during the fight, the alpha male hippo opened his mouth very wide in an attempt to intimidate the intruder. The fight lasted for maybe 10 minutes and was like nothing we've ever seen before.
