Species: Humpback Whale | Location: Antarctica Archipeligo Continent Side Of Gerlatch Strait, Antarctica
NatHab trip to Antarctica onboard the MY Ocean Tramp. At about 8pm in the evening at the south end of the Gerlach strait, we witnessed a transit of humpback whales feeding on krill while also transiting the straight. Some came right alongside of us and provided an up-close and personal view of their size and beauty. Considering they were 40-50 ft ling and the Ocean Tramp was 68 ft long - it was an amazing experience. Once they had investigated us and swam around on the surface, they grouped and did what looked like a parallel feeding movement (two or more swimming from opposite directions toward each other and capturing the krill between them. as one group fed and moved on, another group would come by and repeat similar types of feeding. As it got towards midnight, the sun was just above the horizon and then the world turned pink with some darker purple hues. It was beautiful!
