Species: Humpback Whale | Location: British Colombia Great Bear Rainforest, Canada
I was fortunate to get this photo of cooperative feeding, known as bubble net feeding, by a group of humpback whales. As I photographed the whale in the foreground rolling on its side/back, about six to eight whales suddenly all surfaced together nearby. Our expedition leader explained that the behavior is not instinctual but learned. The group circles a school of herring and the whales exhale from their blowholes to trap the fish in a "net" of bubbles. Then, on signal, all whales will simultaneously swim upwards with open mouths to feed on the trapped fish. It is an unusual sight to witness, and I was lucky to have my camera already focused on the area when the whales surfaced.
