Species: Lycaon Pictus/African Painted Dog | Location: Linyanti/Okavango Delta, Botswana
It was almost dusk and we were watching a large pack of African Wild Dogs, sleeping in small groups, waiting for the hunting to start. Some dogs were starting to stir, checking to see if the Alpha was awake. One dog looked up and made eye contact. The sweet doggy face and the big ears were endearing, but the blood all over the chest was a reminder of what an amazing predator I was seeing. I could have watched them sleeping, their little feet paddling while they dreamed, forever. What I like about this photo is how detailed and expressive the face is, while the blurrier background shows them sleeping in pack in such a lovely way.
