Species: Mountain Gorilla | Location: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda
What made visiting the mountain gorillas such a profound experience was our unexpected proximity to them. As long as we respected the gorillas by being silent and limiting our movements, as well as remembering everything we were told to do, and not do, we were constantly rewarded with the most fascinating behaviors. The more time that went on, the closer of a kinship we felt with these amazing beings, who were so very human-like in their expressions and actions. My family and I continue to regard our time with the mountain gorillas as one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. This young gorilla had spent a great amount of time examining the plant in his or her hand. We so enjoyed watching the child so focused on the subject at hand and marveling over the unexpectedly transparent intelligence and emotion behind the activity.
