Nat Hab's 2024 Guest Photo Contest

guanaco, Torres Del Paine, Chile
Guanaco Panic

Species: Guanaco | Location: Torres Del Paine, Chile

The guanacos had been peacefully grazing when they were panicked by a Puma attack. The group of perhaps 50 guanacos split and headed in different directions. One group ran right at our Nat. Hab. group as we were standing near our minibus. I grabbed a quick shot as we pondered why the wild flight occurred. It soon became clear as we then witnessed a puma subduing the guanaco that was caught. Some puma watchers who were nearby indicated that the puma had hidden nearby in some tall grasses many hours before and waited until the guanacos slowly walked up to spot.

About The Photographer

I have always enjoyed being in nature. This is a passion that I share with my wife, Bonnie. Photography allows us to share with others the interesting things that we find. We will take photos of anything that flies, walks, hops, or slithers in addition to lots of things that don't. Puzzling out what kind of creature it might be in the photo allows the fun of the trip to last until we get the urge for the next trip.
