Desert Elephant, Kaokoveld, Namibia
Desert Elephants Clamber Down The Banks Of The Ephemeral Hoanib River.

Species: Desert Elephant | Location: Kaokoveld, Namibia

Our guides, Abner Simeon and Moses Sheehama, knew when they saw desert elephants walking on the ridge of the ephemeral Hoanib River's steep bank that we were likely in for a treat. They got us down onto the river bed's floor quickly--- in time to see the herd working its way down the steep and sandy bank, one by one. The elephants' desert-adapted (extra wide) feet came in handy in the loose sand. The herd was headed to a small grove of Ana trees, full of ripe berries which were a nutritious treat for the elephants.
