Species: Hyena | Location: Khwai Private Reserve, Botswana
During our stay at Sable Alley, an elephant died of natural causes near the camp. When we got to it, about 10-15 spotted hyenas were in the area, along with many vultures. Some of the hyenas were done eating and resting under trees nearby, and some were still at the carcass. This hyena must have had his (or her) fill, and as he started to wander away from his meal, he spotted our vehicle. For some reason, he came closer and closer, nose in the air and sniffing at it curiously. Anyone who has dogs has seen this exact expression when they aren't sure of something - ears back, nose up and sniffing, neck stretched to get closer without actually getting closer.
About The Photographer
My brother and I went on the Family Botswana Safari with some friends and their kids. We had an amazing time and saw so much wildlife - it was really difficult to choose only five photographs! I took all of these photographs with my Samsung Note 10+.Vote for this photo in the Nat Hab's 2024 Guest Photo Contest People’s Choice Awards!
