Black Winged Kite
Species: Black Winged Kite | Location: Masa Mara, Kenya
By Gary Schmid
A Black-winged Kite framed in a dead tree along a road in the Mara. At the time I didn't know what kind of bird it was. We stopped for just about a minute and I had no clue what I got. After downloading I really fell in love with it.
About The Photographer
I Started taking photos after graduating from college and dental school. My mother was an amateur photographer and gave me a 35mm camera when I graduated from collage. Most of my pictures were taken during travel or of my wife and kids. In 2007 or 2008 I took a week long Photography Workshop with Nevada Weir In Santa Fe, New Mexico and my interest in photography accelerated. At first I was taking general travel pictures (cities, people, landscapes places of interest) but with time I really started to focus on shooting wildlife, which has become my passion. I have been fortunate to be able to travel with several National Geographic and Nat Hab photographers on trips over the years and learn from them. After a trip to Antarctica and South Georgia in 2009 I entered a picture in an Autobon Society photo contest and received Honorable Mention for a Penguin Photograph.
