Species: Monarch Butterfly | Location: El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary, Mexico
This photograph was taken in January 2018 at the El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacan, Mexico. Monarchs from as far away as Canada migrate to specific locations in this area to spend the winter before starting a return northward in the early spring. Getting to this spot requires riding up a mountain in the back of a pick-up truck, then mounting a horse when the truck can go no farther, then dismounting when the horses can go no farther, and hiking up to this spot to see one of the great wonders of the natural world.
