African Elephant, Mandikwe Private Reserve, South Africa
Elephants At The Waterhole

Species: African Elephant | Location: Mandikwe Private Reserve, South Africa

NatHab Photo Expedition to South Africa 2024

The little one is getting squeezed in by older juveniles. It looks like she is barely a year old if that, but holding her own. At least she's getting some shade.

The Matriarch of the herd seems to be looking on. Calves that have no tusks yet and are able to fit beneath the belly of their mothers are usually below one year of age.

Elephants use their trunks to suck up water, then spray it into their mouths. An elephant's trunk can hold up to 2.5 gallons of water at a time, and an adult male elephant can drink up to 55 gallons in less than five minutes. Elephants need about 18 to 26 gallons of water daily. An elephant will urinate approximately 13 gallons throughout the day, voiding about 3 gallons each time they urinate.
