Ever since I was a girl engrossed in National Geographic magazines and maps on my grandmother’s front porch in Saint Paul, Minnesota, I’ve had wanderlust. The need to get out there, to get on the road and see all those places, that awe-inspiring wildlife, the varied ways of life.
Since my first solo trip as a teenager traveling by bus for six weeks from Seattle down the Pacific coast of Washington, Oregon, and California and through Arizona to Albuquerque, New Mexico, I found that travel was like taking a deep breath, expanding my lungs and my mind. I discovered I loved road trips, and in 2015 drove the Alaska Highway (both ways!) and in 2016 Iceland’s Ring Road. I was always accompanied by a camera, starting with a little Kodak Brownie Starmite and graduating to the best digital Nikon I could afford.
I’ve since traveled to all seven continents. And I’m still thinking of more places to go, landscapes and animals I have yet to see—the more remote the better. Few things have brought me such joy, or better memories.
