It is difficult to say whether this male Southern Giraffe (ID'ed by his smooth "horns") finds his companion a blessing or a curse. Red-billed Oxpeckers have a habit of perching on large mammals and eating ticks. However, their preferred food is blood so they may feed on it by pecking at the mammal's wounds to keep them open. Ouch!
About The Photographer
I've been a veterinarian for the past 20 years and only occasionally dabbled in landscape photography. During the pandemic, I started photographing hummingbirds at my bird feeders and then ventured out to local parks to photograph the wildlife. At this point, I would have to say my two favorite hobbies are travel and photography, which is how I ended up on Nat Hab trips!Vote for this photo in the Nat Hab's 2024 Guest Photo Contest People’s Choice Awards! You can vote once per day, and each time you vote you’ll be entered for the chance to win a $500 Visa Gift Card or a $500 WWF Donation.
