Nat Hab's 2024 Guest Photo Contest

Bobcat, Yellowstone National Park, United States Of America
Bobcat On A Kill.

Species: Bobcat | Location: Yellowstone National Park, United States Of America

A bobcat sits atop a mule deer carcass along the side of the Firehole River in the interior of Yellowstone National Park. Based on the location, terrain, tracks and timing of the bobcat and the carcass, it appeared that the bobcat had chased or scared the mule deer off a 200 foot cliff, and then come down to feast on the kill. The Firehole River provided a natural barrier between the bobcat and photographers, so the bobcat could easily be observed while remaining undisturbed while it ate. During its time on the carcass, the bobcat exhibited numerous familiar housecat-like behaviors including cleaning its paws, stretching, and coughing out hairballs. If you look closely at the bobcat's right ear you will notice quills from an encounter that it had with a porcupine sometime prior to the photo.
