Species: Elephant | Location: Ngamiland East, Botswana
First I will apologize for the graphic nature of this photograph. I think when you read the full story you will understand why I chose to include it here among so many beautiful photos. It is important to understand the meaning and intent. Our tour group came across this dead 4-5 year old juvenile elephant shortly after it had been downed by 2 male lions. There were dozens of vultures in nearby trees waiting their turn to feast. The lions were also near by sleeping off their feast. We came back to check on the carnage the next day to see what other species would be helping themselves to the carcass and found 2 adult elephants standing over the dead juvenile’s body. They appeared to be silent for several long minutes before the larger one began running her trunk over the body of their fallen family member, caressing the body and saying goodbye. It was one of the most moving experiences I have ever had in nature. To see the large elephants truly grieving for their lost family member brought tears to all of us. It is the circle of life, we understand that but one doesn’t really think about animals feeling grief.
